How To Avoid Unnecessary Weight Gain During Pregnancy

Weight gain during pregnancy cannot be avoided, and a certain amount of weight is normal and healthy. For example, you may add on as much as four pounds (1.8 kilograms) during the first trimester. After the first trimester, you may expect to gain about one pound (. 45 kilograms) per week. It is not unusual for a woman to add twenty five or thirty pounds during her entire time. However, it is also possible to put on too much weight, and there are steps you can take to avoid this.

Extra Eating

Most people know that you do not eat for two people when you are pregnant. However, you need up to three hundred calories extra per day, for the baby. If you make these calories healthy foods, you may not have to worry about putting on too many pounds.

Skipping Meals

Do not skip meals when you are pregnant. It is not good for you and it is not good for baby. There may be mornings when you do not feel like having breakfast, but you should at least make an attempt to eat something.

When you skip meals, it may actually lower your metabolism. When you go too long without eating, your body slows your metabolism. This is a safety precaution to help prevent starvation.

Frequent Meals

You may find that eating several smaller meals per day, makes you feel better, and this will keep your metabolism up. Another good reason for more frequent eating is heartburn issues. Many women experience heartburn while pregnant. Smaller meals will keep the stomach from expanding, and may help to eliminate many heartburn symptoms.

Quality Meals

What you eat is very important for the baby. You need to have a well balanced diet with fruits and vegetables. This way, the baby will be getting all of the essential nutrients that it requires.

Dealing with Cravings

Sometimes cravings can be a problem, but you can try substituting healthier foods. If you crave something sweet, cantaloupe is a very good choice. If you are craving salty snacks, try pretzels, instead of food that is loaded with fat and calories.

Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated is important for any eating plan, and is especially important now. Your body needs plenty of water to digest and burn the food that you eat. If you are not getting enough water, your digestion and metabolism may be affected.


It is very important to get proper exercise, and this is especially important as you near your due date. If you do not feel like going through an exercise routine, simply walk. When you go shopping, park as far away from the door, as you can. Get out of the house and do something. Spend time at a local park or walk around your local mall for a few minutes each day.


Although weight gain during pregnancy is normal, too much is not a good thing. You only need to eat around 300 extra calories each day, for the baby. Make sure those extra calories are quality things like fruits and vegetables. Do not skip meals and try to spread your meals into six per day, as this will help your metabolism and may relieve heartburn. Drink plenty of water for maximum health and better digestion. Also, get up and go somewhere, as the added exercise can make a difference.
